What is Creator?
Creator is a map and prefab editor for Rust. It opens a real .map file, renders it in 3D with the
game’s own terrain, water, prefabs and monuments, lets you edit all of it, and generates new maps
against Rust’s own worldgen. What you save is a standard .map you can put on a server.
It runs on Windows and installs through the Crucible launcher. It needs Rust installed, because it reads the game’s art from your own copy rather than shipping any of it.
What you can do with it
Section titled “What you can do with it”- Open and edit an existing map. Terrain height, the ground textures, the biome, the topology, the alpha holes, every placed prefab, the roads, rails, rivers and powerlines.
- Generate a new map. Pick a size and a seed and Creator runs the pass ladder, then places the world. See Procedural generation.
- Start from nothing. A blank island at the size you choose, for a fully hand-built map.
- Sculpt and paint. Sixteen sculpt modes including terrace, hydraulic erosion, clone and a stamp library, and a brush that can paint only where a chosen ground texture already is.
- Place Rust’s own prefabs, lock them, hide them, group them, and save a selection as a custom prefab with its terrain slice and its snapping sockets.
- Author what a server needs, not just what the file format holds: trigger volumes, IO wiring, spawn points, map markers, loot, vending and NPC profiles, and ziplines. Those ride in Creator’s own blocks inside the map and are applied by the server extension.
Map sizes run from 1000 to 6000 meters, the same sizes the game itself uses.
Where it fits
Section titled “Where it fits”Drizzza’s suite covers the whole path from an idea to a map people play on, and Creator is the middle of it:
| Stage | Tool |
|---|---|
| Shape the island: heightmap, lakes, cliffs, channels | Crucible Heightmap |
| Finish the map: monuments, roads, prefabs, paint, spawns, volumes | Creator |
| Play it before anyone else does | Crucible Local Server |
You do not have to start in Heightmap. Creator opens a .map from anywhere, generates its own, or
starts you on blank terrain. Monuments, roads, prefabs and spawns are all placed here too. See
the FAQ.
What “alpha” means here
Section titled “What “alpha” means here”The editing and the generation are real and are used to build real maps; the release engineering around them is young. Expect rough edges in installing, in error messages and in recovery, and expect things to change between builds. Generation of a large map is slow, and that is an open issue rather than a solved problem. The fastest way to shape what gets fixed is to report what you hit.
What it does not do
Section titled “What it does not do”- It does not modify Rust. It reads your install, copies what it needs into a snapshot of its own, and never writes to the game.
- It does not redistribute Facepunch’s art. That is why Rust has to be installed: see Sync your Rust content.
- It will never build custom items with custom models. That requires modifying client files, which puts everyone who plays your map at risk of an EAC ban.
Creator is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Facepunch Studios. Rust is theirs.
